Medium Kosher Shofar 13" — Ram's Horn | Sabeny UK

The medium ram's horn shofar — the most versatile kosher shofar you can own

If you are buying your first shofar, or looking for one all-round instrument that works equally well at home and in synagogue, the medium ram's horn shofar is the one to choose. At approximately 13 inches, this is the sweet spot — large enough to produce a full, resonant tone, compact enough to handle comfortably, and the right size for the vast majority of shofar blowers.

This kosher shofar is made from genuine ram's horn, carries rabbinic kosher certification, and is fully valid for the mitzvah of shofar blowing on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The ram's horn is the most halachically accepted shofar material — used in Jewish communities across the world for thousands of years with no dispute as to its kosher status.

At 13 inches, the horn produces a tone that sits between the bright, higher pitch of a small shofar and the deep resonance of a large one — clear, carrying, and distinctly recognisable as the sound of the High Holidays.

As with all natural horns, no two shofars are identical. Colours range from warm tan to rich mahogany brown. Exact shape, curve, and shade vary naturally between pieces. Shofars are measured around the outer curve.

The four shofar sounds

The shofar is sounded on Rosh Hashanah in four prescribed ways:

Tekiah — one long unbroken blast. A call to attention and spiritual reflection. Shevarim — three medium broken blasts. A sighing of the heart, an expression of longing. Teruah — nine rapid staccato blasts. An alarm, an awakening of the soul. Tekiah Gedolah — one great sustained blast held as long as possible. The closing call of the service.

100 shofar blasts are sounded across the Rosh Hashanah morning service in total. The shofar is also blown to close Yom Kippur.

Shofar size guide — which size is right for you?

Small (10 to 12 inches) — ideal for children, beginners, and home use. Bright, clear tone. Also available at Sabeny: Small Kosher Shofar 11" Medium (13 inches) — this product. The most versatile all-round size. Fuller, balanced tone. Large (18 inches and above) — deeper, more resonant sound. Popular for synagogue and experienced blowers. Yemenite kudu horn (from 50cm) — the most dramatic shofar, with a distinctive long spiral and rich bass tone. Also available at Sabeny: Yemenite Kosher Shofar 75cm

Caring for your shofar

Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Allow the inside to dry fully after blowing before storing. Clean the mouthpiece with a dry cloth only — do not submerge in water. A light coat of olive oil on the exterior once a year will help maintain the horn's appearance and condition.
